Dismissed: HSUS Lawsuit to Silence Maine’s Wildlife Professionals

U.S. Sportsmen's AllianceOn Friday, April 3, 2015 Maine Superior Court Justice Joyce Wheeler issued a final judgment in the question of the state’s ability to comment on wildlife issues. In her ruling, Wheeler sided with the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and fully dismissed a lawsuit aimed at silencing Maine’s wildlife professionals.

The case started in the closing weeks of the Maine bear campaign over Question 1 on last November’s ballot. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), through their front group Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting, sued the state of Maine alleging an improper level of engagement in the. The “state,” in this case, was the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, whose vocal and public opposition to Question 1 didn't mesh with HSUS’ wish to stop bear hunting in the state.

L.A. Wildlife Crossing Would Be World's Largest

Mountain LionLOS ANGELES - Prompted by the discovery of a mountain lion known as P-22 in L.A.'s Griffith Park, wildlife advocates say now is the time to build a wildlife passageway over the 101 freeway.

When it was built in the late 1950s, few planners were aware the route through Liberty Canyon was one of Southern California's most important wildlife corridors, linking the Simi Hills to the Santa Monica Mountains. Over the years, the area has been the site of dozens of tragic collisions between motorists and animals.

Post-Fire Stabilization Seedings Have Not Developed Into Sage-grouse Habitat

Sage brush fire

BOISE — The practice of emergency post-fire seeding in sagebrush landscapes of the Great Basin, which was meant to stabilize soils, has not resulted in restored habitats that would be used by greater sage-grouse according to U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Forest Service researchers who published their results today in the journal Ecosphere.

The new study examined the habitat that was present 8-20 years after the seeding projects occurred. These aerial or rangeland drill seeding projects did not always include sagebrush seeds and were not intended to restore wildlife habitat, but instead were designed to mitigate the effects of fire on soil and vegetation. Yet they provide an opportunity to reverse habitat degradation for sage-grouse, a species being considered for protection under the Endangered Species Act.
